Piss On Yo Face feat. Britney Spears
One thing thats awesome about this blog, and i hate to go a bit lady gaga here, but is the people who actually dig this stuff! You guys who come back regularly to listen to me talk nonsense or just to bash one out while looking at my penis! Ha either way its a good feeling. And what is even cooler is when you are actually quite a big fan of one of the people who likes Death and Dumb! This happened when the wonderful Matthew Waldman got in touch. President and chief creator of NOOKA, Matthew is the man behind the incredible brand that have basically made telling the time fun again. Fun, but more importantly cool as fuck!
You can all thank this guy for the competition as he donated a tonne of prizes and one of the incredible watches is being send to our main prize winner.
Anyway, here is the interview from when we caught up over the summer. To accompany our chat, here are some awesome images of me wearing one of my prize positions, my incredible gold Zirc watch… on my cock of corse! Photography by the glorious Greg Bailey.
Big thank you to both Matt and greg.
Hello Matthew! So you’re the man behind Nooka!
For anyone who isn’t familiar with the brand, Tell us a little bit about yourself and your company NOOKA.
I’m a NYC-based artist/designer/educator and NOOKA is my design lab and fashion brand founded in 2004. The ethos of NOOKA is universal language, communication and moreover, bringing the revolution in interface design to physical products.
Your products are very original. What inspires you?
Thanks! I’m inspired by anything that transcends borders both geographic and cultural. this can be anything from music to art, from fashion to food! more than anything, it is the idea that we will one day travel the stars that i find inspiring, and i hope my designs can [tangentially] help bring us there.
Why the name NOOKA?
When I engineered the brand, i wanted a name that wasn’t tied to any one language or geography, so a made-up word was important. i then set out to identify sounds that evoked a sense of futurism to me. the result is “NOOKA” and i’ve attached a few after-stories to it, like it’s the contraction of new york + osaka, amongst other stories as i’m all about the narrative.
How did it feel when you first saw one of your ideas come to life?!
it was and continues to be a very strange and wonderful feeling because even though i apply a process to my designs and have a brand manifesto to guide it, i’m the kind of person who feels more possessed by the process than in control. therefore the results often feel like i am exorcising a demon with a resulting strange amnesia when i complete something. when i then see my designs outside of the context i created it in it feels totally new and unexpected! i often see my stuff on people and think “wow, that’s a cool watch” and then realise wow, that’s one of my designs!. the flip side is then thinking and obsessing over how it can be better…
What’s your most proudest achievement?
Having 2 designs added to the japanese industrial design association permanent collection made me very proud.
So you sent me a few watches to test run and wear with pride! i fucking love them, thank you! How does it feel seeing them on my penis!?
i’m very happy to see them worn anywhere! we often get fan mail telling us how NOOKA is a great icebreaker and conversation starter for meeting people and getting laid. part of our philosophy is that the future is going to be very sexy. Death and dumb’s mixture of fashion, design, art and sex is very much the way i view the world.
The products you design are incredibly iconic, bold and sexy… *cough* like me.
So to bag me as your man, you’ve decided to design a product to impress me and steal my heart. What product would it be? And what would it look like?!
for you i would design a virtual dog collar that would look like a simple 120º chrome arc of thin metal applied directly to your neck [or other sensitive body part(s)]. there would be pulsed shocks to communicate when i was thinking of you, when i need you home etc…
If you could recommend one record and one movie that would help us get to know you and NOOKA better what would it be?
can i recommend more two each?
movies: close encounters of the third kind and the man who fell to earth.
records: DYSTOPIA by the midnight juggernauts and radioactivity by Kraftwerk
What are you top 5 prize possessions?
Original Popi brand Raideen toy i saved up for when i was 12 and somehow still have, original dinky toy UFO interceptor, space 1999 eagle transporter toy, original prototypes of the tofu oyako by devil robots given to me by the creator before they became famous, a pair baby blue demo-boots by miumiu [from the 1990s when miu Miu did menswear].
3 things you look for in a dream Man?
Smarts, Nice ass and thick legs, adventurous eater.
So you’re a fan of my blog?
It is one of the few blogs i check every day.
When did you first discover Death and Dumb?
It was like 2 years ago when i was reading those year end top fashion blogger lists somewhere. deathanddumb came up a few times from fashion insiders i like, so i checked it out and was immediately hooked.
What is it you like about my blog and what is it that keeps you coming back for more?!
your mix of fashion, culture and sex is refreshing and we have a lot of the same tastes, including the type of men you find sexy. and of course, there is the pleasure of voyeurism reading about your life and insecurities. not being able to comment makes the process especially addictive and i feel pulled in like watching a soap opera – you are my modern online downton abbey!
WHAT A BABE! Thanks again xxx
